SXSW Mirror Worlds
Creative Director, 3D modeler and Fabricator
South by Southwest Conference and Festival (SXSW) 2016
Funded by the President’s Office at Virginia Tech and the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT), Virginia Tech
“Mirror Worlds” is an infrastructure project created to study human interaction. The system, currently installed in the Moss Arts Center, is able to sense the physical world and generate a virtual model of the building so people can interact from both physical and virtual environments in this shared space. For the South by Southwest Conference, we created a mini Mirror Worlds by creating an interactive virtual experience of the actual space at SXSW. The whole Virginia Tech booth was recreated in 3D and the tracker was on site to capture audience members in real time. The data was then translated in real time.
As creative director and fabricator, I helped 3D model all the Virginia Tech research projects that were used for the mirror worlds data points and structure. I worked with a team of ICAT hardware and software specialists to create a mini mirror worlds replica to run at SXSW. These models were also used for renderings to promote the project during the initial phase of admittance. We had to obtain official clearance from the South by Southwest committee.
